After a prolonged construction phase due to record-breaking
blizzards and the honest blood, sweat and tears of many Sportrock
staffers, Sportrock II in Alexandria, Virginia had its grand
opening in February 1996 of it's rock climbing Virginia - Washington,
D.C. site. The original 40-foot tall facility, built by Radwall, (who
had also designed our Rockville gym) features an impressive array
of slabs, steep walls, arches, roofs, towers and an awesome bouldering
cave. The climbing walls are coated with a sculpted and painted texture
finish to create a more rock-like feel. Due to high demand, Sportrock
undertook an expansion of the SRII facility in the winter of 1998
eventually increasing the climbing surface by 50% to 12,000 square
feet and creating one of the premier indoor climbing facilities in
the country.
Given
the gym's great rock climbing Virginia - Washington, D.C. location at the confluence of two major Interstates
and its 200-yard walk from the Van Dorn Metro station, many people
have found that this indoor rock climbing gym is as convenient as a
traditional health club. As a result SRII has found a niche among the
20-40 something crowd of Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. seeking
an interesting and different form of exercise and entertainment. The
gym is very popular with young adults and kids from the Virginia suburbs
and nearby Washington and sports an extensive selection of classes
for novice, intermediate or advanced climbers.
