Climbing and teaching are their passions > Shaping young climbers is their mission
Sportrock’s Junior Team instructors have produced some of the finest junior climbers in the country. In the past five years they have qualified and sent over 40 climbers to the Junior National competition resulting in eight top five finishes.

To be selected as a Junior Team instructor, an individual must be passionate about climbing and sharing it with kids. Next, the potential instructor is subjected to Sportrock’s notoriously rigorous interview process where applicants are screened for personality traits and behaviors consistent with our high employee standards. And finally each new Junior Team coach is subjected to several hours of training followed by observation of live classes prior to doing any actual teaching.

The quality of our Junior Team program is due to the dedication and talent of these individuals, and we know your experience with them will be rewarding.

John Woodson
John Woodson  Climbing Since 1993
The hardest: Monkey Fingers (12a), Great Falls
Most memorable: Middle of the Road (11c/d), Great Falls, it’s the longest and nicest climb at the Falls, and showed me what could be accomplished through blood, sweat, and perseverance.
Competition results: Climbing is more about challenging myself and enjoyment than competition.
Favorite climbing areas: Franklin, Great Falls, Seneca, Gunks,
Nelson, Coopers Rocks, Hueco Tanks, New River Gorge, Red Rocks, Red River Gorge, Various locations in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
Why I climb: I enjoy the problem solving and social aspects of climbing. I also like the freedom that I feel when I climb. I can push my mind and body to the limits or just relax and enjoy the place and the people to the fullest, and now that I think about it those two things often happen at the same time.
Why I teach: I love to climb and when I get the opportunity to share that with someone else I get to re-experience the fascination and joy that I first felt, when I learned, through them. I especially enjoy coaching the junior team. Teaching them how to do the seemingly impossible, I can’t express, in words, what it is like to watch a child’s face go from utter frustration to jubilation after achieving their goals.
I attribute my climbing ability to: My hard headed stubbornness. Never give-up, never surrender

The hardest Climb: Reckless Abandon 12b/c NRG

                               Ministry   12b NRG

                               Shadow Boxer V7/8 Coopers

                               New Religion sds V8 Hueco

                               Glass Ass Crack V9 Hueco

Hopefully soon to be Apollo Reed 5.13a

Most memorable: Has to be the first 12 I did outside Animal Logic (12b, NRG). One of the most fun boulder problems I've done. Not much of a route 3 bolt to anchors with a cool dyno to the last hold/ledge, at least how I did it. Don't miss the grab or you take a whipper to the first bolt.
Competition results: Competed a bit some good some bad

The Good: 2 time 1 st place finisher ABS expert division

1 time 2 nd place finisher ABS expert division

The Bad: well… let's not go there

Favorite climbing areas: I keep an open mind and really have enjoyed almost everywhere I've been.
Why I climb: Climbing is a sport that you are constantly being pushed to your limits. There is no limit to how high or how hard you can climb. The most enjoyable thing is when you get one of those challenges/limits that breaks you down until you want to give up then after a little rest you pull it all together and succeed. Noting makes me smile bigger and feel better than that.
Why I teach: Getting people started climbing when they are young will give them a better appreciation for it and for the outdoors when they are older. I also enjoy seeing people improve and become better and if I did my job right eventually they will surpass me because each generation builds on the knowledge of the generation before them.
I attribute my climbing ability to: NEVER GIVING UP!
